Terms of Service
Effective Date: May 4, 2026 · Last Updated: May 4, 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using Oratio (the "App"), you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms"). These Terms form a binding agreement between you and Oratio ("we," "our," or "us") — not Apple. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
If you are using the App on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.
2. What Oratio Does
Oratio is a Christian faith and prayer companion app that:
- Temporarily blocks user-selected apps until a prayer is completed, using Apple's Screen Time / FamilyControls API
- Generates personalized prayers and Bible verses using AI based on your selected emotional state
- Offers Emmanuel, an AI-powered companion for biblical reflection
- Tracks your daily prayer streak and history
Oratio is positioned as a Lifestyle app intended for personal spiritual practice. It is not a screen-time management tool, a productivity tool, or a mental health intervention.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use Oratio. Users between 13 and 17 must have permission from a parent or legal guardian who has read and agreed to these Terms on their behalf.
You must have a valid Apple ID and a compatible iOS device.
4. Your Account
To use the App, you must create an account using email and password, Sign in with Apple, or Sign in with Google. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for all activity under your account.
You agree to provide accurate information and to update it if it changes. You may not use someone else's account or share yours.
5. Subscriptions, Billing, and Trials
Plans available:
- Oratio Pro Yearly — billed annually, with a 7-day free trial for first-time subscribers
- Oratio Pro Monthly — billed monthly, no free trial
Current pricing is shown on the in-app paywall and may vary by region. By subscribing, you authorize Apple to charge the payment method associated with your Apple ID.
Auto-renewal. Subscriptions automatically renew at the same price for the same period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
Free trial. If you start a free trial and do not cancel before it ends, you will be charged the full subscription price. You can cancel at any time during the trial through your Apple ID subscription settings.
How to cancel. Settings › [your name] › Subscriptions › Oratio › Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period; you keep access until then.
Refunds. All purchases are processed by Apple. Refund requests are handled by Apple under their App Store policies. We do not have the ability to issue refunds directly.
Restoring purchases. If you reinstall the App or use a new device with the same Apple ID, tap "Restore Purchases" on the paywall to recover your active subscription.
6. License
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, solely for personal, non-commercial use, in accordance with these Terms and the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
7. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the App
- Bypass, disable, or circumvent the app-blocking feature for redistribution
- Use the AI prayer or Emmanuel features to generate content that is abusive, harassing, sexually explicit, or otherwise harmful
- Use automated means to access the App or its backend services
- Resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit the App or any of its content
- Use the App in any way that violates applicable law
8. AI-Generated Content
Oratio uses third-party AI models (currently Anthropic Claude) to generate prayers, devotional commentary, and Emmanuel responses. AI output is intended for personal devotional use only.
AI-generated content is not:
- A substitute for pastoral counsel, theological instruction, or religious authority
- A substitute for licensed mental health, medical, or crisis care
- Guaranteed to be theologically accurate, complete, or appropriate in every situation
You are responsible for evaluating AI output before relying on it. We are not liable for decisions made based on AI output.
9. Mental Health and Crisis Notice
If you are in crisis, Oratio is not the right tool. Please reach out to a licensed professional.
United States: 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) — call or text
Canada: 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline) — call or text
UK: Samaritans 116 123 · Worldwide: findahelpline.com
10. Screen Time / FamilyControls
By granting Screen Time permission, you authorize Oratio to apply and remove app shields on the apps you select. Oratio does not collect, log, or transmit which apps you have selected, or which blocked apps you attempt to open. Your selection is stored locally on your device using iOS App Groups.
You can revoke Screen Time permission at any time in iOS Settings, which immediately disables the blocking feature.
11. Your Content
If you write your own prayer or send messages to Emmanuel, that text is processed by our backend and the AI provider only for the purpose of generating a response. We do not store the content of free-text prayers; Emmanuel conversations may be stored in your account so you can revisit them.
You retain ownership of any content you submit. You grant us a limited license to process that content solely to provide the App's features.
12. Intellectual Property
The App, its design, branding, prompts, and accompanying content are owned by Oratio and protected by copyright and other laws. Bible verse text is quoted from the World English Bible (WEB), a public-domain translation. Our trademarks may not be used without written permission.
13. Third-Party Services
The App relies on services from Apple, Google (Firebase, Sign In), Anthropic, and RevenueCat. Their respective terms and privacy policies govern your use of those services. We are not responsible for third-party services or their availability.
14. Changes to the App or These Terms
We may update the App and these Terms from time to time. Material changes to these Terms will be communicated via the App or by email. Your continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
We may add, change, or remove features at our discretion. We may discontinue the App with reasonable notice.
15. Termination
You may stop using the App and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if your use creates risk for us or other users. Sections 8, 9, 12, 16, 17, and 18 survive termination.
16. Disclaimers
17. Limitation of Liability
18. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, demand, or expense (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of the App, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party right.
19. Apple-Specific Terms
You acknowledge that these Terms are between you and us, not Apple, and that Apple is not responsible for the App or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the App. In the event of a failure of the App to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price for the App; to the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims by you or any third party relating to the App, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to conform to any legal or regulatory requirement, or claims arising under consumer-protection or similar legislation.
If a third party claims that the App or your possession and use of the App infringes that party's intellectual property rights, Apple will not be responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of that claim. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
20. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable in Ontario, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be resolved by binding arbitration administered by the ADR Institute of Canada in Toronto, Ontario, under its Arbitration Rules. Each party bears its own costs unless the arbitrator awards otherwise. Where prohibited by law, this arbitration clause does not apply.
